Commemorate and Honor, Nevertheless

I remember watching the Grand Parade annually with my family. We used to go find an empty space beside Mercury’s Drugstore or the bank in front of it minutes before the parade is scheduled to start, for us to save some good seats before a crowd appears. Stalls of popcorn, nuts, and water will always be present. I remember how I used to rank each truck which is decorated best, or which gave more candy. I remember getting multiple wounds and scratches from rushing to the road to get candy. And I remember going home counting me and my sisters’ candies to find out who got more. Such good old days.

The Vigan City Fiesta created numerous happy memories that I won’t be able to forget. Even if I am not a child anymore, it was fun seeing children doing the things I have done before, knowing that it will surely be a part of their childhood memories the same way it became a part of mine. Unfortunately, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Vigan City Fiesta is once again postponed this year. Fortunately, not cancelled. However, I doubt that it will still be the same as before, considering that the number of cases are once again skyrocketing. A lot of people have been looking forward for this event to take place, including me. During the last month of 2021, we were all happy when we found out our city is once again COVID-free. Most of us thought that finally we are one step closer to bringing back the life we had before this crisis. However, just around new year’s day, they reported the recent outbreak of the Omicron Variant. The smiles we were supposed to have due to the celebration of a new year ahead quickly turned into frowns in a blink of an eye.

I am not updated or aware on how they will hold the Vigan City Fiesta this year, but surely they would make the citizens’ safety their top priority. Even if our experiences with the said fiesta won’t be same as before, let us still celebrate nevertheless, it is a Fiesta after all. Let’s just hope that next year, we can finally truly celebrate this wondrous event without the doubt, the anxiety, and the fear of catching this deadly virus. To conclude, we should still commemorate and honor the Vigan City Fiesta, nevertheless.

  3. I definitely agree with you. This pandemic may be scary and strict in prohibiting us from socializing or gathering in a crowd, but it wouldn't stop us from celebrating the festival.
